1. Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan
The golden couple of Bollywood Jaya and Amitabh met at the Pune Film Institute in early 1970s. Prior to this, the two met on the sets of the film Guddi. In an interview, Jaya once said, “I was introduced to him on the sets of Guddi. I was impressed by him and somewhat in awe as he was Harivanshrai Bachchan’s son. I fell in love with him very soon.”
Did you know? In 1973, Jaya and Amitabh wanted to visit London, to celebrate the success of their film Zanjeer, along with the other cast and crew members, but Amitabh’s parents objected them going together without being married. Without wasting any time, the angry man of the film industry, proposed to Jaya, who instantaneously accepted the proposal. The two got married on June 3, 1973, and immediately left for London.
2. Abdul Sattar Edhi and Bilquis Edhi
The humanitarian couple, (Late)Adbul Sattar Edhi and Bilquis Edhi got married in April 1966. Edhi Sahab proposed to 17-years-old Bilquis, who had left school after eight grade and joined the nurses training course at the Edhi Nurses Training Centre, Mithadar. According to Bilquis Edhi, “I was very immature when we got married, but he was always kind and tolerant.” The couple has four children together who are involved with the Edhi Foundation and the management of the Edhi village. The two remained married till Edhi Sahab passed away in July, 2016.
Did you know? Their honeymoon was anything but usual, the newlyweds discovered a young girl with head injuries at their dispensary just after their wedding ceremony. Edhi Sahab, fondly used to reminisce that his new bride did not regret the time lost in consoling the twelve year old’s concerned relatives or supervising blood transfusions.
3. Sunil Dutt and Nargis
A real life love story that actually rose from the ashes. The ethereal beauty Nargis met Sunil Dutt in 1953 on the sets of Do Bigha Zameen. By then, Nargis was an established star while Dutt was an aspiring new actor. The actress was in a long relationship with the legendary Raj Kapoor, who despite his love for Nargis, never agreed to divorce his wife. Dutt won her over with his undeterred love and determination.
Did you know? During the shoot of the 1957 classic Mother India, Nargis got trapped in a raging blaze. Enter Sunil Dutt, like a real hero he rushed in to save her life. And with that, not only he had saved her but won her heart forever. The two remained married till they breathe their last.
4. Anwar Maqsood and Imrana Maqsood
Pakistan’s most popular humorist and playwright Anwar Maqsood and his wife Imrana have been married for last the 46 years. As per the humorist, Pakistan got divided into two, but their marriage remained intact. Although there did come Bangladesh-like moments during their married life, they managed to pull through, because marriages cannot succeed if there were no altercations between couples.
Did you know? Imrana Maqsood has recently penned a book on the life and work of her husband, Anwar Maqsood titled, Uljhey Suljhey Anwar. Negating her own life Imrana said, it was not easy to bring up artists; she brought up 1 father and 2 children.
5. Denzel and Pauletta Washington
For the last 33 years, award-winning actor and director Denzel Washington and his wife, actress Pauletta Washington’s marriage has been one of Hollywood’s longest lasting relationships. Denzel shared his secret to a good marriage, “Not to give up on each other. It’s a commitment. It’s not all the honeymoon; it doesn’t last forever, so you work at it. And hopefully you’re good friends first, that might help!”
Did you know? Although they have been together since 1977, but Denzel had to propose Pauletta three times before she finally agreed to marry him in 1983.
6. Dharmendra and Hema Malini
Love was bound to happen when Indian cinema’s dream girl, met the original He-man of Bollywood. Hema Malini and Dharmendra fell in love on the sets of movie Tum Haseen Main Jawan. At that time, Dharmendra was already married with two kids, but that didn’t deter the love of two. They tied the knot in 1980. The couple worked in many films together and their on-screen chemistry was as amazing as their love for each other.
Did you know? Hema had many suitors who were dying to marry her. Famous among them were big names like Sanjeev Kumar and Jeetendra, she claimed to have almost married the latter, had she not met her soul mate. The actress finds Dharmendra extremely romantic and admits he still looks at her the way he did when they first met.
7. Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson
The couple first met in 1981 while filming the set of Bosom Buddies. Wilson played the role of Lucifer – the romantic interest to Hanks’ co-star, Peter Scolari. In an interview that makes you gasp in awe, Hanks has said, “The only thing we ever argue about is who loves each other more.”
Did you know? Their romance sparks in 1984 at the set of Volunteers. Hanks has left his unhappy marriage, and Wilson broke up with her fiancée, claiming, “I didn’t know what being in love was until I met Tom.” The couple finally wed in 1988.
8. Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh
One of the most iconic onscreen and off screen pairs, Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh’s love story has touched the hearts of millions. The teenage romance which blossomed around 1975, stands rock solid even after almost 4 decades. On being asked what keeps them going strong, Rishi Kapoor said, “It has always been Neetu who has made all the efforts, I have always been a difficult man.”
Did you know? For Rishi, marriage was a liability that he was not ready to take. During the initial days of their courtship, Rishi had clearly told Neetu, “I’ll only date you; I’ll never get married to you.” Neetu, who had just entered her teens, was too much in love to lose him over this. They dated for five years before finally tying the knot on 22 January 1980. Their wedding was the biggest and the most awaited extravaganza of tinsel town at that time.
