10. Shout-out to my Ex – Little Mix
This song can join the list of epic breakup and revenge songs! Little Mix will have you flipping your hair, #OverIt and #LovingLife, because let’s face it, your ex was a loser and breaking up with him as made you a stronger woman today. More power to you!
9. Pillow Talk – Zayn
A treat for all the Directioners (that is what they call 1D fans right? Little girls don’t attack us!) Zayn is all grown up and able to croon seductively to us. He’s easy on the eyes and has a great voice, which is what gives this song enough credibility to make our list!
8. Work – Rihanna Feat. Drake
Are Ri-Ri and Drake together? They should be, given the insane chemistry they share in work! This song is so catchy, and so easy to learn! All you need to do is… work, work, work, work! (See what we did there?)
7. Piece by Piece – Kelly Clarkson
Do you love your dad? YOU BETTER, YOU COLD HEARTED REPTILE. Now go give your daddy a tight hug and tell him how much you love him, because you would need some major paternal love after listening to Kelly Clarkson’s heartbreaking anthem. STAHP taking your father for granted.
6. Cheap Thrills – Sia
It’s Friday night, so hit the dance floor! This is one song you can play on blast with your BFFs… or by yourself in your room wishing you had the kind of friends Sia has, to be her kind of happy without any money, anywhere to go or a significant other!
5. Starboy – The Weeknd
Oh you know it’s ON when Daft Punk get involved in a song, and when they collab with someone as awesome as the Weeknd, expect fireworks! The Weeknd’s smooth as silk vocals will literally make you melt into a puddle of mush, when he says “I’m a starboy” and you scream YASS, because he is EVERYTHING.
4. Closer – The Chainsmokers feat. Halsey
When you miss your ex and you want them back, and also when you love Blink 182 and are dead excited to hear them mentioned in any song. You can listen to Closer, wishing for immortality in the backseat of a rover, which you might be able to afford. Which if you can, we are jealous of you.
3. Side to Side – Ariana Grande feat. Nicki Minaj
Undoubtedly one of the best collaborations of 2016, Ari and Nicki just slay on this song, with the catchy lyrics, amazing vocals and killer beat. It’s a great workout song too, and Ari clearly thinks so too. She literally spends the entire video on an exercise cycle, looking fly as heck!
2. Freak – Lana Del Rey
Lana is a goddess and she can do no wrong. This song has some major 70s Manson family vibes, and she is singing with indie music god father John Misty. It makes you want to drink life’s kool aid, go to the beach, date a guy with long hair, fall in love and then run off to San Francisco in a time machine. So. Many. Feels.
1. Formation- Beyoncé
Does it surprise you that Queen Bey has the top spot on our countdown? If it does, take a long walk off a short bridge. This song is EVERYTHING. Beyoncé makes it clear. She came to slay, you best believe it. Come on ladies, get in formation. Go hard, take what’s yours, you’re a star. That’s what Bey teaches us and you best listen.
Here are some songs that didn’t quite make our list because we had only ten spots, but were definitely worthy tunes that were dropped this year:
7 Years – Lukas Graham
7 Years is a hauntingly beautiful song about the human experience and the need for constant companionship at every stage of life, societal values and building relationships. It’s a rare modern ballad with a message and with heart; therefore it deserves a spot on our countdown.
Work from Home
A perfect feel good song for when you’re hanging with the girls, driving around town on your own on a particularly good day, in love and wanting to appreciate your man, or just working out to a sick beat.
Stitches- Shawn Mendes
This achingly beautiful sad song will give you some major flashbacks to your emo days (if your emo music included a lot of happy clapping). But stitches is that rare song that has catchy as hell beats with sad as hell lyrics. Win, Win!
Sorry – Justin Beiber
Is the Beibs apologizing to Selena? Is he apologizing to his fans for being a huge D-bag? Is he apologizing at ALL, because the lyrics never actually say that he’s sorry… just ask if it’s too late to say it! Well, whatever he wanted, the song is a definite guilty pleasure that I’m sure all of us are singing on the sly, when we’re alone.
Send My Love (To Your New Lover)- Adele
Honestly, compared to all of other Adele’s awesome songs, this one kind of falls flat, but only because it just doesn’t come with all the emotional wreckage that Adele usually makes you feel every time she sings. That being said, Adele is still a force of nature, and she SLAYS, and the song is super sweet, hence she deserves a shout-out on our list.
