Zara’s Salon is a much established name in the beauty and fashion world for their utterly creative work with make-up and hair. They are best known for their services and bridal make up by their loyal clientele. Rizwana Khan, the founder owner of the salon is a go-getter at best. With years of hard work and experience behind her, she has grown the brand from a single salon to three state-of-the-art purpose built establishments in Karachi’s well known vicinities.
Here is our rendezvous with the beauty expert where she reveals everything a bride-to-be would love to know.
Tell us about your early life and career?
Having started my career at a very young age, at a time when it was pretty uncommon for married women work, my journey was far from smooth. I moved to Riyadh with my husband soon after we got married. I had no working experience and the make-up industry was nowhere close to where it is today. The need to move from a housewife to being employed job came purely out of financial need and I had to be dedicated. Soon my efforts were rewarded with appreciation, which became my main motivating factor. After several years of struggling financially with a family to support, we eventually moved back to Pakistan where I opened my first salon in Bahadurabad. Almost right away the new venture as an owner, instead of employee was even more demanding. I was working around 80 to 100 hours a week. Five years later everything started to fall in place, my clientele grew, staff became more efficient and one salon grew into two and 20 years later we owned three salons. The journey though long and full of compromises, bore fruit and resulted in a career that started out of necessity but turned into a legacy which I hope my daughter, in whose name it was started can carry forward.
How do you train your staff?
I feel motivation comes in 2 main forms, appreciation and monetary rewards. Our staff is very hardworking and keen to learn and therefore 90% of them tend to stay with us for as long as they want to work. The training procedure includes physical observation, practical application and lastly they are given a hand-free to choose what they need to understand. The first step and last step being the most important.
