You read that right, makeup can help chisel down your face and bring forward your best features. Here’s how you can give an illusion of a slimmer face, enhance your favourite features, and play with proportion—all with makeup. Optical illusions, indeed.
1. Invest in the right arsenal
Dark makeup shades recede, while lighter colours bring features forward. Use this concept to your advantage by investing in a cool toned contour colour one or two shades deeper than your skin tone and a luminous highlighter that’s a bit lighter than your complexion.
2. Cut down on the cheeks
Placing blush directly on the apples of the cheeks makes you look youthful but it also adds to the roundness. To slim down the cheeks, apply blush only to the upper apples of your cheeks and slightly around your temples.
3. Chisel out your cheek bones
Create the illusion of a slimmer face by applying your contour shade in a diagonal line from the center of your cheek up toward the ear. Make a slight fish face (you know, the pucker) while you do this with your brush to figure out the perfect placement, and don’t forget to blend. The higher you place your contour shade, the sharper and more chiseled your cheekbones will look.
4. Fake a nose job in 2 minutes
To fake a thinner nose, swipe a contour powder down the sides of the bridge, stopping before you get to the nostrils. Blend highlighter down the bridge of your nose in a vertical line to complete the effect.
5. What double chin?
If you want to tone down a rounded chin or make it appear more pointed, then try this. Dust on your contour colour along your jawline and blend well to help make it appear sharper and more defined.
6. Arch up the brow
Bet you never thought about how your brows can play a part in how slim or round your face looks! Your eyebrows shouldn’t be super thin but not too thick either, and should have a pronounced arch in the middle. Arched brows help elongate your face and can slim down a round face.
7. Instantly smaller forehead
If you have a big forehead, you can blend your contour shade upward into your temples and around the hairline to emphasize the angular qualities of your bone structure.
8. Accentuate the goodness
By using highlighter down the center of your face, it plays with light to take attention away from the width of your face. Plus, it helps you look radiant, so it’s a win-win. Start by blending in highlighter between your brows, down the bridge of your nose, above your cupid’s bow and in the center of your chin.
9. Downplay the lips
Full lips can emphasize roundness on the face, but eyes made to look large with makeup will make the rest of the face appear smaller in comparison, so try playing up your eyes with liner, shadow, and mascara while leaving lips natural with a tinted balm or gloss.
10. Pop them collar bones
Pop some highlighter on your collar bones and shoulders to make them stand out even more. If you want to take it a step forward, contour the edges of the collar bones to further enhance their look.
